Week One
This week I met with head of the organization and discussed with him the issue that I am learning about and the service learning project for class. He told me that he agreed that Project Learn might be a good way to study understanding the human memory since this program helps to reinforce academic learning when the kids aren't in school. Playing scrabble, doing crosswords and word searches, etc. help the students remember what they learn easier and primes the brain to be more receptive to new information. After that he walked me around and showed me the facilities and introduced me to the staff and other volunteers before we parted ways. The session was basically what I expected for what a first visit should be which was meeting the people and seeing the facilities. So in that respect the session went quite well for all those who were involved.
Week 2
As for my service hours, this week, I spent some time hanging out with the kids at Boys and Girls Club. At first, I thought this would be a big strain on what little free time I have due to work and school but I have to admit it is kind of fun to hang around the kids and play Scrabble, do word searches, and crosswords. I enjoyed give subtle hints or even suggestions new words for them to use in Scrabble, hence expanding the kids' vocabulary. All in all, the experience reminds me of when I'm hanging with my niece and nephews, playing video, card, or board games.
